Fashion Week 2019: Sustainability Takes Center Stage with Dior, Marine Serre, and Courrèges
During Paris Fashion Week, Maria Grazia Chiuri unveiled the Spring/Summer 2020 collection for Christian Dior at Longchamp Racecourse, featuring floral designs and straw hats amidst a garden of 164 trees. Marine Serre, who won the LVMH Prize in 2017, presented her Marée Noire collection made from 50% recycled materials. Yolanda Zobel from Courrèges introduced vinyl jackets derived from algae and collaborated on leather sourced from Pirarucu fish. The fashion sector ranks as the second largest polluter, contributing 8% of global emissions. At the G7 summit in Taormina on May 26-27, President Emmanuel Macron assigned Kering CEO François-Henry Pinault to investigate sustainability, resulting in the G7 Fashion Pact signed by 32 fashion brands. Gucci CEO Marco Bizzarri declared the Milan show on September 22 as carbon neutral.
