Fashion Pact: 32 global brands pledge sustainability, but critics question enforceability
In August 2019, President Emmanuel Macron of France convened 32 leaders from the global textile industry at the Élysée Palace to address ecological concerns, resulting in the Fashion Pact. This initiative targets net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, along with the restoration of biodiversity and ocean conservation. Among the signatories are Adidas, Burberry, and Chanel; however, the pact lacks binding authority and depends on voluntary adherence, which critics argue complicates supply chain oversight. Gucci has unveiled a carbon-neutral strategy, while LVMH, which did not join the pact, asserts its dedication to sustainability. Fast fashion companies like H&M and Nike are also making progress. The fashion industry contributes 20% of global wastewater and 10% of carbon emissions. A recent survey indicates growing consumer awareness, though sustainability is not the main factor in purchasing decisions.
