Fashion 2025: Fast Fashion, Luxury, and the End of Designer Stars

The January 2025 menswear and couture shows in Paris revealed a fashion industry in flux. Luxury brands face declining interest from new consumers, while fast fashion giants like Zara, H&M, and Uniqlo close the gap with accessible prices and collaborations with designers from Kering, LVMH, and Chanel. The boundary between couture and luxury ready-to-wear is blurring: Dior's menswear show featured a lavish minimalist set rivaling couture, and its couture collection was nearly indistinguishable from its prêt-à-porter line. Chanel presented its couture collection on January 28, designed by its in-house studio after parting ways with Virginie Viard and announcing Matthieu Blazy as her successor. Kim Jones abruptly left both Fendi and Dior after the Paris menswear shows, raising questions about the future of the star designer model. The Italian government allocated €250 million for fashion investments and €30.5 million for sustainability, but Carlo Capasa, president of the Camera della Moda, called it insufficient. Over 2,000 clothing, textile, and leather factories closed in the first nine months of 2024, with a 27% drop in registered companies from 2010 to 2023. Chanel cut 70 jobs (2.5% of its US workforce) to adapt to economic challenges.
