Fascination Japan: Monet, Van Gogh, Klimt at Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Curated by Evelyn Benesch, the 'Fascination Japan' exhibition at Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien explores the influence of Japanese art on Western creators from the 19th century to the present. Following the U.S. opening of Japanese ports in the mid-1800s, Japonism gained popularity in Europe. The 1864 London Universal Exhibition featured Sir Rutherford Alcock's collection, and a decade later, Philippe Burty introduced the term 'Japonism.' Notable artists highlighted include Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh, Gustav Klimt, and the Blue Rider group. A segment dedicated to spirits and mythical beings draws inspiration from Japanese folklore. Contemporary artists Margot Pilz, Eva Schlegel, and Stephanie Pflaum offer new interpretations of the traditional tea house. The exhibition is open until January 20, 2019.
