Farah Al Qasimi's 'Star Machine' Opens at AGWA

exhibition · 2026-04-22

The Simon Lee Foundation Institute of Contemporary Asian Art at the Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA) presents 'Star Machine', the first major museum exhibition of Farah Al Qasimi in Australia. Opening on 4 February 2023, the show features over 20 works from 2017 to 2021, including the video 'General Behaviour' (2020). Al Qasimi, based between Brooklyn and Dubai, uses photography to explore how spaces and subjectivities interact, often focusing on social media's role in self-creation and the blurring of public and private spheres. Her hyper-colourised images capture friends and strangers in shopping malls and homes in the US and UAE. The exhibition title comes from her self-portrait 'Star Machine' (2021), taken during the pandemic, which uses a light projection to bring stars indoors. Curated by Rachel Cieśla, the exhibition is supported by the Simon Lee Foundation and the Australian Government.
