Far-right protesters attack socialist bookshop in London's Bloomsbury
On Saturday, 4 August, a socialist bookshop in Bloomsbury, London, was attacked by far-right protesters. The group, numbering around a dozen, carried placards referencing the 'British Bolshevik Cult' and wore red 'Make Britain Great Again' caps. One individual donned a Donald Trump mask, suit, and tie while holding a sign that read 'Stop Banning Patriots from Facebook'. Upon entering Bookmarks, the protesters shouted abuse at staff, chanted songs about Muslims and paedophiles, and vandalised displays. The incident followed a march against the removal of Alex Jones's conspiracy theory website, Infowars, from Facebook. No injuries were reported. Dave Gilchrist, manager of Bookmarks, described the attack as horrific, warning that it should alarm anyone familiar with history, noting that Nazis targeted books because radical ideas challenge racism and fascism. A video of the event was posted on social media by group members.
