Fantasia Film Festival 2024: Scrappy Genre Cinema and the Future of Media

The Fantasia International Film Festival in Montréal, which wraps up on August 2, celebrates innovative media practices along with outstanding films. Now marking its 30th anniversary, the festival connects avant-garde and mainstream genre cinema, moving away from the elitist focus of 20th-century festivals. Highlights of this year's program include a documentary on Ultraman's 60-year history, crafted by Tsuburaya Productions and envisioned by Hirokazu Kore-eda, with direction from Yu Nakamura and Kazuki Yoshida, detailing the tokusatsu studio's 1966 superhero creation.
