Fallen Fruit installs Spektro Completo at Palermo's Botanical Garden
The Californian duo Fallen Fruit, composed of Austin Young and David Allen Burns, has created a new site-specific installation titled Spektro Completo/Iridescenza for the Culture Concept Store at the Orto Botanico in Palermo. The installation, which opened on May 26, 2019, covers 230 square meters of biodegradable cotton wallpaper produced by a Korean manufacturer. It features plants, flowers, and buds from the Botanical Garden, as well as birds, raptors, and butterflies from the collections of the nearby Museo di Zoologia Doderlein. The project was commissioned by SiMuA (the University Museum System) and CoopCulture, which manages the garden's museum services. The Culture Concept Store serves as a multifunctional hub combining front office, ticket office, and bookshop, with merchandise inspired by the Fallen Fruit work. This follows the duo's earlier success at Manifesta 2018 in Palermo, where their installation Theatre of the Sun was widely photographed and later exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London as part of FOOD: Bigger than the Plate. University rector Fabrizio Micari praised the work for creatively uniting the Botanical Garden and the Doderlein Museum.
