Fake Instagram Collectors Exposed as Art World Promotion Scheme

A group of four fake art collectors on Instagram—Pier Paolo Lonati, Carlo Alberto Ferri, Beatrice Rinaldi, and Raffaele Sartori—has been unmasked after two years of fabricating purchases, sales, and event participation. Gallerist Federico Vavassori grew suspicious of a work posted by Lonati and, after direct messages and cross-referencing with other collectors, discovered none of them existed. The profiles vanished quickly. The scheme, reported by ArtEconomy/Il Sole 24 Ore, involved meticulous social media posts and email conversations that fooled gallerists, curators, journalists, and other collectors. Even the journalist who exposed the story had previously interviewed one of the fake collectors for buying advice. The operation is believed to be a marketing strategy to promote emerging Italian artists, possibly orchestrated by the artists themselves. The incident highlights the art system's vulnerability to virtual validation, accelerated by the pandemic's shift to online interactions.
