Fair Play: Artists Critique Entertainment Society at Fondation Guerlain

Curated by Jean-Marc Prévost, the exhibition 'Fair play – de nouvelles règles du jeu' at Fondation d'art contemporain Daniel & Florence Guerlain in Les Mesnuls, France (23 September – 15 December 2002) brings together five artists who question the artist's role in a society of generalized entertainment. They intervene in public space, using video, photography, and installation to critique cultural codes. Jananne Al-Ani films close-ups of the traditional English game Cat's Cradle, revealing societal rules. Gustavo Artigas stages a handball match across a giant wall symbolizing the US-Mexico border, and shows a video of himself crashing a motorcycle through a museum wall in Mexico City. Joâo Onofre has models recite the final words of Rossellini's 'Stromboli' during a casting, exposing the loss of meaning in media. Alicia Framis creates architectural models like 'Apart Together (Japan House)' with sliding spaces to combat social isolation. François Curlet uses Rorschach test patterns in wallpaper to restore the viewer's freedom of interpretation. The exhibition emphasizes interaction as a critical stance against cultural homogenization.
