FAI reopens 64 sites with new safety measures after COVID-19 closure

institutional · 2026-04-27

On May 22, 2020, the FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano reopened its 64 cultural sites following a two-month shutdown due to COVID-19. Marco Magnifico, the executive vice president, outlined the foundation’s approach, which included the online initiative 'Italia mi manchi', resulting in a 6% increase in membership renewals by early April. This led to a subsequent project, 'Italia mi piaci', for the next phase. However, the closure caused a significant drop in new memberships and a €3 million loss from the canceled Spring Days event. FAI reduced its budget from €32 million to €26 million without any layoffs. The reopening is being conducted gradually, with online ticket sales and shorter hours, while staff have adapted to various roles, showcasing flexibility and unity. Magnifico remains hopeful about the foundation's original vision.
