Factum Foundation Completes Digital Mapping of Caravaggio's Contarelli Chapel in Rome

Pii Stabilimenti della Francia has tasked the Factum Foundation for Digital Technology in Preservation with the digital archiving of the Contarelli Chapel in Rome, which houses three masterpieces by Caravaggio. This initiative, carried out over three weeks in June 2026, employed cutting-edge non-invasive methods to gather high-resolution data on the chapel's artworks and architecture while maintaining visitor access. The digital archive, which will be owned by Pii Stabilimenti, is intended for conservation, research, and future public use. Adam Lowe from Factum mentioned that this project reinforces their connection with Caravaggio. Ciro Gifuni stated that while no new discoveries were made, existing knowledge was confirmed. The chapel, which draws up to 6,000 visitors daily, faces significant conservation issues due to heavy foot traffic.
