Factory International: Manchester's New £186M Cultural Hub Opens June 2023
Factory International, a vast new cultural space in Manchester designed by OMA (Rem Koolhaas and Ellen van Loon), will open in June 2023. Spanning over 13,000 square meters and costing £186 million, it is the largest national cultural project since Tate Modern in 2000. The venue will serve as the permanent home of the Manchester International Festival (June 29–July 16, 2023). Its design incorporates a warehouse preserving the arches of the historic Pineapple Line viaduct, a hall, and a 1,600-seat flexible auditorium. The project was conceived in 2014 with £78 million pledged by then-Chancellor George Osborne as part of the Northern Powerhouse initiative. Delayed by Brexit and rising costs, funding now includes £99 million from the government, £51 million from Manchester City Council, £7 million from the national lottery, and £5 million from private fundraising, with £24 million still to be raised via commercial sponsorship. Artistic director John McGrath calls it an investment in Manchester's future. Opening events include Yayoi Kusama's immersive inflatable sculpture show "You, Me and the Balloons" and Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle's performance "Free Your Mind" (October 18–November 5, 2023), inspired by The Matrix, featuring writer Sabrina Mahfouz, artist Es Devlin, choreographer Kenrick "H20" Sandy, and composer Michael "Mikey J" Asante. The venue aims to create 1,500 jobs and add £1.1 billion to the local economy over a decade.
