Facsimile of Depero's 'Bolted Book' Funded via Kickstarter

publication · 2026-05-05

A facsimile edition of Fortunato Depero's 1927 artist's book 'Depero Futurista' (the 'bolted book') is being produced through a Kickstarter campaign ending December 1, 2016. The project is a collaboration between New York publisher Designers & Books, the Center for Italian Modern Art (CIMA), and the Mart Museum in Rovereto, which holds the Depero Archives. The exact reproduction uses the original copy owned by Laura Mattioli, whose father Gianni Mattioli assisted Depero in producing the original. The facsimile will be accompanied by a Reader's Guide co-edited by Marco Enrico Giacomelli and Steven Heller, featuring scholarly essays and English translations. The original book, a milestone in graphic design and artist's books, was created to document Depero's work and promote his brand ahead of his move to New York in 1928. Bound with metal bolts, it was designed as a 'dangerous object' that could damage other books on a shelf. The campaign follows a successful model used by Designers & Books for a Ladislav Sutnar facsimile.
