Facing India: Female Perspectives at Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg

The Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg presents 'Facing India', a group exhibition running until October 7, 2018, featuring works by five contemporary Indian women artists: Tejal Shah, Bharti Kher, Vibha Galhotra, Reena Saini Kallat, Mithu Sen, and Prajakta Potnis. The show explores India's complexities through feminist, environmental, and social lenses. Tejal Shah addresses gender fluidity and violence against transgender individuals and women. Bharti Kher uses saris and jewelry to highlight women's roles and struggles, including prostitution in Calcutta. Vibha Galhotra critiques the Anthropocene and pollution, referencing the Yamuna River and Delhi's air quality. Reena Saini Kallat examines borders, from the India-Pakistan conflict over Kashmir to US-Mexico migration. Mithu Sen creates hybrid sculptures that blur human/animal and male/female boundaries, challenging caste and gender discrimination. Prajakta Potnis focuses on psychological borders between generations and technological eras. The exhibition is curated by Niccolò Lucarelli.
