Fabrizio Plessi's video installations marry contemporary art with Brescia's ancient heritage

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Video art pioneer Fabrizio Plessi (born 1940, Reggio Emilia) presents five video installations across Brescia's UNESCO sites—Capitolium, Basilica di San Salvatore, and Museo di Santa Giulia—as part of the third edition of Palcoscenici Archeologici. Titled "Plessi sposa Brixia," the immersive journey uses golden flows and a ring motif to symbolize the artist's marriage to the city, echoing the Doge's marriage to the sea. Curated by Ilaria Bignotti and supported by Fondazione Brescia Musei president Francesca Bazoli, the project coincides with Brescia's role as co-Capital of Italian Culture 2023 alongside Bergamo. Plessi describes his style as "baroque and minimalist," aiming to harmonize past and future. The installations also inaugurate the new UNESCO Corridor, a "kilometer of accessibility" connecting the sites. Bazoli highlights that previous collaborations with artists like Juan Navarro Baldeweg, Francesco Vezzoli, Emilio Isgrò, and Davide Rivalta have proven the power of contemporary art to reinterpret ancient heritage. The project seeks to foster public care for Brescia's patrimony through a new visual code blending analog creativity with digital tools.
