Fabrizio Plessi's Digital Christmas Tree and Rialto Video Mapping Light Up Venice

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Venice celebrates the 2020 holiday season with two public art installations despite the pandemic. Fabrizio Plessi's "Natale Digitale" is installed in Piazzetta San Marco between the two columns. The work consists of 80 rectangular LED wall modules forming a 9.5-meter-high tree of life, symbolically uniting earth, water, and sky. Plessi described the golden mosaic as inspired by his love for Venice and the gold of St. Mark's Basilica, with each tile having its own life. The installation will be visible until January 6, alongside "L'Età dell'Oro" on the facade of the Ala Napoleonica of Museo Correr, which was installed in September and extended for the occasion. Separately, as part of the "Natale di Luce 2020" program, a video mapping projection by Alessandro Toso Fei of Etra Comunicazione illuminates the Rialto Bridge until December 31. The projection features images of great figures from Venetian art and architecture, including Vittore Carpaccio, Jacopo de' Barbari, Antonio da Ponte, Vincenzo Scamozzi, and Canaletto. Promoted by the Municipality of Venice and Vela Spa with the partnership of the Consorzio di Tutela del Prosecco DOC, the projection anticipates the 1600th anniversary of Venice's founding on March 25, 2021. Mayor Luigi Brugnaro commented that tradition and innovation are key words for Venice, and the projections demonstrate the city's resilient strength.
