Fabrizio Corneli installation commemorates WWII massacre victims in Bagno di Romagna
An installation by Florentine artist Fabrizio Corneli (b. 1958) now marks the 1944 Carnaio massacre in Bagno di Romagna, Forlì-Cesena province. During WWII's final stages, retreating German troops killed 27 local civilians in reprisal. Seventy-six years later, the Monumental Cemetery of San Piero (built 1888–1891, designed by Cesare Spighi) houses a new ossuary featuring Corneli's work, which highlights victims' names and ages. The memorial activates when a visitor stands at the crossing of nave and transept. The project also included restoration of the cemetery chapel, funded by the Emilia-Romagna Region at a cost of €120,000. Corneli, who studied at Florence's Academy of Fine Arts, has created permanent installations in Belgium, Germany, and Japan.
