Fabrica Creates Video Art 'Stella' for ESA Satellite Launch

digital · 2026-05-05

On March 7, 2017, at 01:49 GMT, the second satellite of ESA's Sentinel 2B mission launched from Kourou, French Guiana, aboard a Vega rocket for the Copernicus EU program. To celebrate, Fabrica, Benetton Group's communication research center in Villorba, Italy, created 'Stella,' a video accompanied by a musical piece inspired by sounds from the Rosetta mission. Francesco Novara (author), Laura Sans (videomaker), and Kenzi Benabdallah (artistic director) sampled, processed, and synthesized the 'singing comet' noises and other audio from ESA's SoundCloud. The video explores cosmic space through earthly objects, drawing parallels from ESA's space image archive. The event was celebrated at ESOC in Darmstadt, Germany, and virtually via #Sentinel2Go.
