Fabric Workshop and Museum exhibition reexamines wallpaper through contemporary art

The exhibition 'On the Wall: Wallpaper and Tableau' ran from May 9 to September 13, 2003 at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia. Curated by Judith Tannenbaum of the RISD Museum and expanded by Marion Stroud, the show featured 33 contemporary artists alongside historical pieces. It explored how artists engage with wallpaper as a medium, tracing its evolution from 19th-century Victorian status symbol to modern decorative forms. Andy Warhol's 1966 Cow Wallpaper established an important precedent connecting art with domestic products. Virgil Marti contributed two notable works: Lotus Room, which references Warhol, and Bully Wallpaper installed in a men's room depicting high school yearbook figures. Other artists included Renee Green, Rodney Graham, John Baldessari, Robert Gober, Jenny Holzer, Adam Cvijanovic, and Nicole Eisenman. The exhibition examined tensions between art and decoration, with some works successfully subverting decorative expectations while others struggled to integrate content with form. Historical context covered William Morris's Arts and Crafts reaction against mechanical reproduction, 20th-century style evolution through art deco and modern-abstract periods, and postwar suburban wallpaper trends. The show's expansion from its original version as 'On the Wall, Wallpaper by Contemporary Artists' raised questions about curatorial focus and effective presentation of decorative arts in museum settings.
