Fablab Venezia: Digital Fabrication Hub Merging Technology and Culture
Fablab Venezia, founded in 2013 at the VEGA Science and Technology Park in Marghera, is a multidisciplinary workshop that applies digital fabrication technologies—such as 3D printing and CNC machining—to cultural and artistic practices. The lab is part of a global network of approximately 1,800 fablabs across 100 countries, inspired by Professor Gershenfeld's MIT concept. It operates through three main activities: service (supporting creative and entrepreneurial projects), training (teaching digital fabrication skills), and an open lab for innovation. The lab is led by Andrea and Leonidas and focuses on sustainability, social innovation, and bridging tradition and technology. During the pandemic, it intensified internal projects like Re-Art | technologies for culture, a platform aimed at digitizing cultural heritage and contemporary art practices, and Territoriotipo. Re-Art seeks to build a network of cultural stakeholders to promote digital tools for restoration, musealization, and large-scale art installations. Fablab Venezia collaborates with artisans, designers, artists, companies, and cultural institutions, positioning itself as an inclusive hub for digital making. The lab advocates for independent fablabs that ensure economic sustainability while spreading digital literacy across all societal layers.
