Fabio Mauri's Drawing as Memory and Trauma at Museo Novecento

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Museo Novecento in Florence presents a three-part exhibition project dedicated to Fabio Mauri (Rome, 1926–2009), a key figure of the Italian neo-avant-garde. The project includes the monographic show 'Solo. Fabio Mauri' focusing on his drawings, the reenactment of his historic performance 'Ebrea' for Holocaust Remembrance Day, and the installation of his monumental work 'Il Muro Occidentale o del Pianto' at Palazzo Vecchio. Curated by Giovanni Iovane and Sergio Risaliti, the exhibition emphasizes drawing as a performative and symbolic act, a denunciation of violence, and a project for changing language to improve the world. The show opens with 'Schermi' (Screens), an early work from the late 1950s that elevates a contemporary object to an ideal dimension. It then moves to the figurative series 'Apocalisse' with chromatic bursts and soft lines, and the 'Dramophone' works where repeated signs of increasing diameter evoke obsession. The exhibition concludes with photographs from the 1975 book-work 'Linguaggio è guerra', which assigns language the nature of a weapon.
