Fabio Bucciarelli's War Photography Opens Mudima Lab in Milan
Mudima Lab, a new photography-focused offshoot of Fondazione Mudima, opened on March 7, 2017, with the project GUERRE. The initiative comprises six solo exhibitions and a final book. The first show, The Dream, features Fabio Bucciarelli (born 1980 in Turin), a Robert Capa Gold Medal, World Press Photo, Bayeux Calvados, and Picture of the Year winner. Since 2011, Bucciarelli has documented the humanitarian consequences of war and human rights abuses in conflict zones across the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. The Dream, published as a book by FotoEvidence in May 2016, spans from 2011 to 2016 and focuses on the birth of a massive migrant population. Bucciarelli employs a dreamlike, conceptual style to counter media saturation and apathy, using pinhole photography and Pinolina. The exhibition includes images of objects found on deceased migrants, stemming from an assignment for the New York Times at LABANOF in Milan. Curators Irene Di Maggio and Fabio Mantegna aim to engage both the general public and the art world with photojournalism. Future plans include artist talks, book presentations, and workshops on conflict photojournalism. Bucciarelli will participate in AIPAD New York and Photo London with MeMo, a cooperative supporting freelance photojournalists.
