Fabien Giraud & Raphaël Siboni's 'The Everted Capital (Katabasis)' at Casino Luxembourg
Fabien Giraud and Raphaël Siboni present the third and final phase of their project 'The Unmanned' at Casino Luxembourg, running until September 4, 2022. The exhibition, titled 'The Everted Capital (Katabasis)', transforms the historic Casino Bourgeois building into a film set and projection space for a multi-episode fiction exploring capitalism's history and future. It includes four episodes of season 2: 'The Axiom', '1894-7231', '1971-4936', and '585 BCE-2022'. Season 1 was shown at the same venue in 2014 and 2018. Sculptures from season 1 are displayed in 'The Form of Not', season 3. A publication titled 'The Unmanned' accompanies the exhibition. On the first-floor landing, a display of blades traces an archaeological history of the cutting tool, curated by an AI drawing from Augustus Pitt Rivers' collection of over 12,000 objects. Episode 1, 'The Axiom', depicts a world without a sun, using thermal cameras to show animals, plants, and minerals as mediums of exchange before metallic currency. Episode 4, '585 BCE-2022', shows two human-like figures in a confined space, with a man in milky liquid (representing AI) manipulating objects while a pregnant woman speaks in a dialect, suggesting AI-generated mythology. The exhibition questions whether capitalism will survive ecological collapse and explores post-human capitalism's reliance on storytelling.
