Ezio Bosso's Dance Legacy: A Tribute to the Composer's Impact on Choreography

Ezio Bosso (Turin, 1971‒Bologna, 2020), the Italian composer whose music profoundly influenced contemporary dance, is remembered for his collaborations with choreographers worldwide. His partnership with dance began in the early 1990s with Paola Bianchi, producing 'Flautus' (1994) and '6 Novembre 1994' (1995). A breakthrough came with Roberto Castello's 'The Breath of the Thramp' (1997), which introduced Bosso's music to international choreographers. Christopher Wheeldon commissioned 'Within the Golden Hour' (2008) for the San Francisco Ballet, set to Bosso's 'The Sky seen from the Moon'; the work later entered the Royal Ballet's repertoire at the Royal Opera House in 2016. Bosso's longest collaboration was with Rafael Bonachela and the Sydney Dance Company, yielding works like 'LandForms' (2011), 'We unfold' (2009), 'The Land Of Yes and The Land of No' (2009), and the acclaimed '6 Breaths' (2010). The latter, recorded at Abbey Road Studios, explores human breath as a metaphor. Despite his illness, Bosso remained dedicated to creating original music for dance, refusing to merely provide pre-existing scores. His legacy includes works for Sadler's Wells Theatre, Balletboyz, and other companies. Bosso once said, 'Music has given me a wonderful life that, according to certain standards, I should not have lived.'
