Extraperlo: curators replace designers in Madrid shoe box exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Madrid Design Festival hosts the fourth edition of Extraperlo, a curatorial platform founded by Andalusian designer Jorge Penadés. For this edition, Penadés and co-curator Maria Cristina Didero invited 14 prominent design curators to submit projects that fit in a shoe box and cost no more than 500 euros to produce. The exhibition runs from February 18 to 21, 2021, at Antonio Ulloa 36, Bajo Izquierda, Madrid. Participants include Aric Chen (director of Design Miami-Basel), Libby Sellers, Ana Domínguez Siemens, Tulga Beyerle (director of the Museum of Applied Arts Hamburg), and Annalisa Rosso. The projects explore themes such as originality versus copy, curatorial speculation, and collaborative commissioning. The event also features a focus on Valencia, World Design Capital 2022.
