Extragarbo's 'Concerto' turns Lodi's urban soundscape into a relational jukebox

From September 12 to October 31, 2024, the Venetian collective Extragarbo presents 'Concerto,' a site-specific project at Platea | Palazzo Galeano in Lodi, Italy. The work is part of 'Fare collettivo,' a series curated by Giulia Menegale that invites collectives to activate the association's street-level window space on Corso Umberto. Extragarbo installed a jukebox that randomly plays songs collected from interviews with about a hundred local residents. The collective asked: 'If you could choose a piece of music to broadcast in public space, which would it be? Where would you broadcast it?' The responses formed an 'affective archive, a sound-sentimental cartography of the city.' The project draws on Brandon Labelle's theory of sonic agency and Avery Gordon's sociological imagination. Simultaneously, Palazzo Bronzo continues its evolving installation at Platea Project, absorbing the outcomes of each 'Fare collettivo' intervention into an ongoing archive that explores collective uses of public space through elements reminiscent of Italian village festivals.
