Expodemic: Rome's Festival of Foreign Academies and Institutes Returns

festival-fair · 2026-04-26

The second edition of the Festival of Foreign Academies and Cultural Institutes in Rome, titled Expodemic, runs from May 7 to August 25, 2024, at Palazzo delle Esposizioni. Curated by Lorenzo Benedetti with Francesca Campana, the festival explores the historical link between modern exhibitions and academies. Rome hosts the highest number of international cultural centers, starting with the French Academy in 1666, and is where modern exhibitions were invented by Giuseppe Ghezzi, secretary of the Accademia di San Luca, who organized shows at San Salvatore in Lauro. The exhibition features works by 19 foreign artists in residence, including Kamrooz Aram, Kapwani Kiwanga, and Bjørn Melhus, many site-specific. A parallel project, 3500 CM2, distributes free artist posters across 21 partner venues, with contributions from John Armleder, Elisabetta Benassi, and others. The public program includes performances, guided tours, and events at institutions like the American Academy in Rome and the Accademia dei Virtuosi al Pantheon.
