Experimenter Gallery Marks 16 Years with Artist-Selected Group Show in Kolkata

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Experimenter gallery in Kolkata celebrated its 16th anniversary with a group exhibition curated by its own artists. Sohrab Hura, Bhasha Chakrabarti, and Rathin Barman each selected emerging artists who had never shown with the gallery before. The resulting exhibition, running from 5 April to 14 June 2025, occupies both of Experimenter's Kolkata spaces at Ballygunge Place and Hindustan Road. Hura chose two artists: Aishwarya Arumbakkam presents 'Ten sounds I cannot hear' (2020–22), a video-animation based on her father's step count during COVID-19 lockdowns, accompanied by a recording of her mother's breathing. Sathish Kumar shows his ongoing photographic series 'Sunlight' (2020–), black-and-white images capturing moments of sunlight interacting with everyday objects across India. At the Hindustan Road location, Rai, selected by Chakrabarti, exhibits 'Fever' (2024–), paintings of Goa's coastal wetlands that reveal fluorescent pigments only under UV light, alongside the video 'Search Party' (2024) featuring a fisherman working at night. Rupali Patil, invited by Barman, presents 'If we opened people up, we'd find landscapes' (2025), paintings and sculptures addressing hysterectomies among female sugarcane workers in Beed, Maharashtra. The exhibition deliberately avoids a unified narrative, instead highlighting each artist's individual thematic concerns through decentralized curation.
