Exhibition Reimagines British Working-Class Photography Through Immigration and Urban Culture

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Herbert Art Gallery & Museum in Coventry presents 'After the End of History: British Working Class Photography 1989–2024,' curated by Johny Pitts. The exhibition challenges traditional depictions of British working-class life by focusing on communities transformed by first-, second-, and third-generation immigration. Featuring approximately two dozen photographers, the show moves beyond black-and-white social realism to document contemporary urban culture, fashion, music scenes, and provincial life. Works date from 1989 onward, with Pitts referencing Francis Fukuyama's 1992 book 'The End of History and the Last Man' in the title. Ewen Spencer's eight prints capture UK garage dancefloors from the turn of the millennium, while Trevor Smith's triptych portrays boxer 'Prince' Naseem Hamed in 1994. Josh Cole documents local rap scenes, and Elaine Constantine's portraits capture Northern Soul enthusiasts. Rob Clayton's 'Resident, Wilson House, Saturday Afternoon' (1990–91) shows domestic life, and Jim Mortram's 'Emergency Housing' (2012) depicts a family watching music videos. Kavi Pujara's 'Talitha, Ross Walk' (2020) features an Asian youth with blue hair, contrasting with Clayton's 'Shop Proprietors' (1990–91) of Asian shop owners. Rural life appears through Richard Grassick's sheep farmers and Joanne Coates's fishermen and pigeon fanciers. Chris Shaw's night porter photographs reveal exhausting labor conditions. The exhibition runs through 16 June 2024.
