Exhibition 'Notes on Travecacceleration' Showcases Black Trans Brazilian Artists at LUX London
The exhibition titled 'Notes on Travecacceleration' is currently on display at LUX in London and accessible online until 30 June. Curated by Brazilian artist Ode, it showcases sound and moving-image pieces from seven Black trans artists hailing from Brazil. This exhibition builds upon Ode's 2021 video essay that examined travesti identity in relation to accelerationism and critiques of capitalism. The featured works tackle issues such as racism, transphobia, body politics, and colonialism. Jota Mombaça's piece 'Morar na Indefinição' asserts that 'peace is not an option' for Black trans individuals, while Maria Clara Araújo's 'Travesti' não se traduz! emphasizes Brazilian travesti identity. Other contributions from Bruna Kury, Aun Helden, and Urias delve into themes of gender affirmation and power. The exhibition also engages with the ideas of thinkers like Gilles Deleuze and draws attention to Brazil's alarming trans murder rate, which saw 175 trans women killed in 2020.
