Exhibition Histories Talk: Lubaina Himid on 'The Thin Black Line'

exhibition · 2026-04-22

On March 3, 2016, Afterall teamed up with Whitechapel Gallery for the eleventh Exhibition Histories Talk. The event featured a discussion between artist and curator Lubaina Himid and curator Paul Goodwin. They focused on 'The Thin Black Line,' an exhibition held at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London back in 1985, along with other shows from that period. Himid's work in the 1980s highlighted a new generation of Black female artists, pushing against traditional exhibition norms. The talk took place at Whitechapel Gallery from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, and you can find a video of it online. This initiative is part of Afterall's Exhibition Histories research, in partnership with Bard College and the University of the Arts.
