Exhibition Explores Posthumanism Through Eco-Design and Interspecies Art in Singapore

exhibition · 2026-04-20

The Posthuman City exhibition at NTU Centre for Contemporary Art in Singapore, running from 23 November to 8 March, presents works blending art and science to challenge human-centric perspectives. Jae Rhim Lee's Coeio – Infinity Burial Suit (2016), a biodegradable garment infused with mushroom spores for eco-friendly decomposition, exemplifies the show's focus on sustainable alternatives. Other functional designs include Lucy + Jorge Orta's Orta Water – Portable Water Fountain (2005) for water purification and Irene Agrivina's Soya C(o)u(l)ture (2014), which transforms tofu wastewater into materials. Pierre Huyghe's video Untitled (Human Mask) (2014) features a masked monkey in Fukushima, probing boundaries between human and animal consciousness. Nicholas Mangan's Termite Economies (Phase 1) (2018) models termite-inspired gold mining structures, while Marjetica Potrč's Earth Drawings (2009-2016) depict indigenous cosmologies. Animali Domestici's tapestry Bangkok Opportunistic Ecologies (2019) visualizes urban wildlife coexistence. The exhibition advocates for interconnected, less wasteful urban living through prototypes and artistic inquiries, with Ana Teixeira Pinto contributing theoretical insights on performance and humanness.
