Exhibition at Galeria Tarsila do Amaral revisits Joãozinho Trinta's 1989 samba school parade with contemporary works

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The exhibition at Galeria Tarsila do Amaral in São Paulo's Centro Cultural São Paulo centers on Joãozinho Trinta's 1989 samba enredo 'Ratos e Urubus, Larguem Minha Fantasia' for Beija-Flor de Nilópolis. Curated by Thais Rivitti and Carlos Eduardo Riccioppo, the show includes a reinterpretation of the banned 'Cristo Mendigo' float by Raphael Escobar and Os Cupins das Artes. Photographic works from Barbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca's 'Swinguerra' project, which represented Brazil at the 58th Venice Biennale, are featured. Archival materials include Valtemir Miranda's photographs and Cláudio Urbano's sketches of the parade's floats. The exhibition also presents an untitled painting by Nuno Ramos, a visual poem by Augusto de Campos, and two installations by Márcia X. Alayde Alves, the exhibition's creator, notes the samba schools' role as cultural nations in Rio de Janeiro. The show runs from January 30 to May 30, 2026.
