Exhibition at Castello del Buonconsiglio Resurrects Renaissance Painter Marcello Fogolino

An exhibition at the Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento sheds light on Marcello Fogolino, a Renaissance painter long overshadowed by critical neglect. Fogolino, along with his brother Matteo, fled to Trento after being accused of murdering a barber in Friuli, escaping trial and banishment from the Venetian Republic. The brothers also served as spies for Venice, sending military and political reports on imperial troop movements in exchange for safe conduct. The show highlights Fogolino's career from his early training in Vicenza, influenced by Bartolomeo Montagna, to his work in Trento under Bishop Bernardo Cles, where he decorated the Magno Palazzo alongside Dosso Dossi and Girolamo Romanino. His style evolved after a stay in Friuli in the 1520s, inspired by Pordenone's frescoes and landscape painting. The exhibition includes altarpieces, six known engravings (three on display), and external frescoes at Casa Cazuffi in Piazza Duomo, featuring monochrome allegories and proverbs. The show runs at the Castello del Buonconsiglio, with works from the Musei Civici di Vicenza and other collections.
