Examining Balkan Identity and Representation in Contemporary Art Exhibitions
In 2004, several exhibitions showcased Balkan identity during Slovenia's EU accession, including 'Call Me Istanbul ist mein Name' at ZKM in Karlsruhe from April 18 to August 8, a retrospective of Mangelos, and Marjetica Potrc's project at Kunsthalle Fridericianum from May 20 to September 19. Additionally, 'L’arte del mediterraneo' opened at MACRO in Rome on June 3, and the Cetinje Biennial took place in Montenegro in July. Luchezar Boyadjiev's concept of 'Deep Europe' encapsulates the region's cultural identities, while scholars like Slavoj Žižek challenge Balkan stereotypes. Previous exhibitions, such as 'In Search of Balkania' (2002) and 'Blood and Honey' (2003), also contributed to this discourse. The 2nd Tirana Biennale (2003) struggled for recognition despite the efforts of Edi Muka and Gëzim Qëndro. This article explores how art represents Balkan identity.
