Ex-Paper Mill in Alzano Lombardo Transforms into Cultural Hub Spazio Fase

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The former Cartiera Paolo Pigna paper mill in Alzano Lombardo, near Bergamo, has been repurposed into a cultural center called Spazio Fase. The initiative began in 2015 when artist Giulio Locatelli gathered 18 artists and 5 curators from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts to revitalize the disused industrial space. The mill, operational from the mid-19th century until its closure in 2012, once employed many local families. It now hosts artist studios, including those of Machyckova, Daria Romanenko, and Daniele De Giovanni, as well as events and exhibitions. Currently on view is "L'intimo segreto del mondo là fuori," a group show curated by Alberto Ceresoli featuring 37 painters born between the 1970s and 2000s, including mid-career and emerging artists from various academies. The exhibition explores the tension between interior and exterior, past and present, through the medium of painting. It runs until June 29. The site's strategic location along the Roggia Morlana canal historically provided hydraulic power for mills and paper production. The transformation is managed by Spazio Fase, which has reactivated the former industrial plant as a cultural hub.
