Ewa Juszkiewicz: First Solo Museum Exhibition at Museo Thyssen
The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid presents the first solo museum exhibition of Polish artist Ewa Juszkiewicz (born 1984, Gdańsk), running from May 26 to September 6, 2026. Curated by Guillermo Solana in close collaboration with the artist, the show features over twenty paintings created between 2013 and the present, including a group of works made specifically for this exhibition. Juszkiewicz is known for reinterpreting European portrait tradition, particularly 18th- and 19th-century female portraiture, by concealing faces with elaborate compositions of fabric, hair, flowers, fruit, and organic forms. Her work blends historical painting with surrealist disruption, questioning centuries-old ideals of female beauty, social expectations, and historical representation. Using a refined technique with a vivid, saturated palette, she subverts traditional portraiture while maintaining a contemporary sensibility. The exhibition is part of the program dedicated to the Blanca and Borja Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. Juszkiewicz's work has been shown internationally at institutions including the Brooklyn Museum (New York), Centre Pompidou-Metz, Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris, Museo Picasso Málaga, and National Museum of China in Beijing. Her paintings are held in collections such as the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris, Brooklyn Museum, Albertina in Vienna, Long Museum in Shanghai, and Museum of Contemporary Arts San Diego.
