Evident Image of the Year Contest Celebrates Microscope Photography Winners

The winners of the sixth annual Evident Image of the Year competition have been announced, highlighting the blend of art and science in microscope photography. Katie Holden from the UK took home the top global prize for her artwork "Neuronal Cosmos," which features clusters of neural cells from pluripotent stem cells that resemble a galaxy. In the materials science category, Ireland's Muhammad Tahir Khan was honored for his scanning electron microscope photo of a lignin fiber that looks like sand dunes. Regional accolades went to Igor Siwanowicz (Americas) for pollen grains, Kentaro Mochizuki (Asia-Pacific) for rat heart sarcomeres, and Gerd Günther (EMEA) for a chicory flower stigma. A total of twelve honorable mentions were awarded, with submissions from 34 countries evaluated by judges based on visual impact and scientific significance. The announcement was made in late April, with Evident's CEO Wes Pringle emphasizing the contest's goal to merge art and science, bringing attention to unseen beauty.
