Evergrande liquidators seek US$8.4 billion from PwC entities in Hong Kong lawsuit

economy-finance · 2026-05-18

In a major legal case in Hong Kong, liquidators for China Evergrande Group are pursuing 57 billion yuan (about US$8.4 billion) from three branches of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). They argue that PwC's global division is responsible for audits tied to the company's accounting issues. The claim is being brought by Tiffany Wong and Eddie Middleton from Alvarez & Marsal against PwC International, PwC Hong Kong, and PwC China. Recently, the High Court reviewed PwC International's request to be removed from the lawsuit. Their representative, Richard Handyside, claimed they only coordinated from London and didn't perform the audits, which were done by PwC Hong Kong and PwC China. Deputy Judge Patrick Fung Pak-tung is expected to issue a decision in the next three months.
