Ever Astudillo's 1970s Colombia comes to Milan in 'Latin Fire' at Velo Project
Velo Project in Milan presents 'Latin Fire', a solo exhibition of Colombian artist Ever Astudillo (Cali, 1948–2015), featuring photographs and drawings from the 1970s and 1980s. The show offers a vision of Cali that avoids direct documentary intent, transforming urban space into a silent theater with anonymous, often back-turned figures. Astudillo's practice, rooted in daily experience and influenced by Latin American melodrama and film language, balances formal control with openness to the unexpected. The installation juxtaposes different languages and temporalities without forcing convergence. Complementing Astudillo's work is an intervention by filmmaker Virgilio Villoresi (Fiesole, 1979), who presents kinetic sculptures made from vintage objects and optical devices, translating the stillness of Astudillo's images into fragile, hypnotic movement. The dialogue between the two artists shifts the focus toward a more explicitly perceptual dimension, prompting reflection on vision and memory. The exhibition runs until May 16, 2026, at Velo Project, Piazza Geremia Bonomelli 5, Milan.
