Eve Sonneman's 1970s Diptych Photography Exhibition Extended at Nohra Haime Gallery

Eve Sonneman's exhibition 'Sight/Sound: Works from the '70s' continues at Nohra Haime Gallery in New York City, now extended through March 12, 2011. The show highlights her distinctive diptych photography from the 1970s, a period when she was the sole female artist represented by Leo Castelli following Lee Bontecou's departure. Sonneman's signature approach involved pairing two images of the same scene from identical vantage points, creating stereoscopic visual narratives that explore temporal perception through subtle variations in movement or population. Her 1978 work 'Cropdusting, Clovis, New Mexico' exemplifies this method, transforming an ordinary rural event into visual drama through scale shifts and horizon disruptions. This particular diptych belongs to the permanent collection of the Australian National Gallery and has been exhibited internationally at institutions including the Centre Pompidou, Musée de Toulon, London's Photographers Gallery, and Castelli Gallery. While Sonneman's later career included abstract watercolors, painted sculptural objects, and sustained Polaroid photography, her 1970s photographic work remains her most recognized contribution. The artist first became familiar with New Mexico during her graduate studies in Albuquerque in the late 1960s, which informed works like 'Cropdusting.'
