Evan Roth Tapsests Museum Atrium with Browsing History

American artist Evan Roth (born 1978) has covered the entire atrium of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Jacksonville in Florida with prints of his internet browsing data from the past four months. The installation, titled "Since You Were Born" and on view until June 23, 2019, is the largest and most monumental iteration of Roth's ongoing series "Internet Cache Self Portrait," which he began in 2012. The work uses a software that extends the life of the computer's cache, normally emptied periodically, to accumulate images, texts, and other digital traces. The resulting kaleidoscope mixes social media faces, Google Maps, ads, corporate logos, bureaucratic documents, and film screenshots in random juxtapositions. Roth was invited by MOCA Jacksonville director Caitlin Doherty to create the site-specific piece for the museum's Project Atrium commission series. The title references the birth of Roth's second daughter on June 29, 2016, the starting date for the data collection. Roth stated that he hopes viewers reflect on their own relationship with networks and connectivity rather than trying to piece together his identity, describing the work as "more a portrait of our culture at this historical moment than a work about me." The project transforms temporary digital memory into a permanent, overwhelming physical presence that both reveals and obscures through extreme overload.
