Evan Roth's first Italian solo show at FMAV Modena explores internet ethics
FMAV Fondazione Modena Arti Visive presents the first Italian solo exhibition of American artist Evan Roth, curated by Chiara Dall'Olio. The show features works from 2013 to 2023, including photography, video, installation, and painting, examining the relationship between internet and society. Roth, born in 1978 in Okemos, Michigan, began working with open-source systems and intellectual property laws. The exhibition includes a new installation titled … [dot dot dot], a suspended triangular prism made of ethernet cables converging into a router, referencing Guglielmo Marconi's 1901 radio antenna in Poldhu, Cornwall. Another room presents Strands, a series of acrylic paintings started in 2020 using custom software by Roth and Cezar Mocan that overlays 121 cartographic projections from 150 AD to 2018 onto maps of submarine communication cables. Skyscapes: Modena (2023) shows altered sky photographs of Modena using cartographic projection methods. A collage of 24 screens displays infrared footage of transoceanic cables from Sweden to Portugal, Australia to Argentina, and Hong Kong to New Zealand, emphasizing natural settings like trees as natural network diagrams.
