Eva Nielsen's 'Diluvium' Opens at ICICLE Space in Shanghai

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The ICICLE Cultural Space in Shanghai has inaugurated its new artistic season with 'Diluvium', the first solo exhibition in the city by French contemporary artist Eva Nielsen, running until June 18, 2026. This marks Nielsen's third exhibition in China. The show, co-curated by Marianne Derrien and Myriam Kryger, features recent works—several created specifically for this venue—that extend from the building's facade in the historic center to its interior spaces. Nielsen, born in 1983, holds a Master's from the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris (2009) and studied at Central Saint Martins (2008). Her practice combines painting, photography, and silkscreen, often exploring unstable landscapes, infrastructure fragments, and peripheral sites with ghostly human presences. Some works were produced during the BMW Art Makers residency at Les Rencontres d'Arles. The exhibition's title references a deluge, echoing the artist's interest in geological and organic timescales, and draws on the 'prehistoric future' concept developed by Nancy Holt and Robert Smithson. Derrien describes Nielsen's work as fostering a living ecosystem of paths and interstices that unsettle vision, while Kryger notes a dynamic of resurgence and burial akin to memory.
