Eva Kotátková's 'A Storyteller’s Inadequacy' at Modern Art Oxford

exhibition · 2026-04-22

Eva Kotátková's solo exhibition 'A Storyteller’s Inadequacy' at Modern Art Oxford (30 November 2013–2 February 2014) featured performances and installations exploring the failure of ordered narrative to express chaos. A central performance, 'Narrator in Good Shape and Narrator in Decay' (2013), staged a lecturer struggling to deliver a talk based on an essay by the artist's father, philosopher Petr Kot'átko, citing Beckett and Borges as models for chaotic narration. The exhibition included a stage shaped like a faulty speech organ ('Speech organ of Anna', 2013), where performers interacted with metal contraptions evoking Wilhelm Reich's concept of 'body armour'—repetitive patterns that control behavior. Kotátková's work draws on anti-psychiatry ideas from Franco Basaglia, who advocated deinstitutionalizing mental hospitals. Her installation 'Asylum' (2013), shown at the 55th Venice Biennale, featured fragmented bodies trying to escape confinement, inspired by visits to Bohnice psychiatric hospital in Prague. At Modern Art Oxford, paper cut-outs in a vitrine combined joyful figures with constrained body parts, reflecting the collapse of continuous narration. Kotátková's practice gives form to psychological restraint and the struggle for voice within social systems.
