Eva Hide's Irreverent Ceramics Subvert Domestic Comfort in Rome

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Apulian duo Eva Hide, composed of Leonardo Miscogiuri and Mario Suglia, presents a body of ceramic works at Ada Project in Rome that deliberately disrupt the cozy domestic sphere with perverse and kitsch elements. Created between 2018 and 2019, their feticcio objects blend reassurance and transgression, using animal motifs, unsettling references, and popular imagery to expose the repressed underbelly of everyday life. The exhibition, titled 'Non tutte le storie hanno un lieto fine,' transforms familiar environments into spaces of impending unease, where moral conventions are dismantled through playful yet irreverent juxtapositions. Drawing on Thomas Ligotti's philosophy of repression and the grotesque, Eva Hide's work forces viewers to confront hidden fears, sexuality, death, and family dynamics. The pieces, such as 'Playground' (2018, painted majolica, 39.5x22x23 cm), are described as almost animated, carrying a sense of guilt that renders spectators fragile. The review, written by Cecilia Angeli, a master's student at NABA in Visual Arts and Curatorial Studies, highlights how the duo's formal and conceptual incongruities unsettle the viewer, much like a grandmother's familiar home suddenly revealing a dark secret. The exhibition runs at Ada Project in Rome.
