Eva Helene Pade's The Rite of Spring Paintings Reimagine Female Sacrifice at ARKEN Museum

exhibition · 2026-04-20

At the ARKEN Museum of Contemporary Art, Danish artist Eva Helene Pade showcases a collection of paintings that reimagine the female nude, drawing inspiration from Igor Stravinsky's 1913 ballet, The Rite of Spring. Influenced by Pina Bausch's 1975 interpretation, Pade's work transforms the ballet's narrative of a sacrificial virgin into vivid representations of ecstasy and violence. Her paintings, which include references to Édouard Manet's The Execution of Emperor Maximilian in Forfædrenes ritual (2024–25), feature golden shrouds. The exhibit, displaying ten pieces from 2024-2025, highlights works such as Offerdansen [V] and [H], with the finale, Forårsofret (2024), depicting the ballet's climax. This exhibition is available until August 31 at the Ishøj museum.
