Eurovision 2027: Warring Winners to Lose Hosting Rights

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which organizes the Eurovision Song Contest, has updated its rules to stipulate that starting in 2027, the winning country will lose the right to host the following edition if it is involved in an armed conflict. The rule change, announced on August 12, 2026, comes amid protests over Israel's participation, which has achieved high placements partly due to alleged systematic voting manipulation. According to the new regulations, the winning broadcaster cannot automatically host if an armed conflict, sensitive geopolitical situation, or any other circumstance materially affects the safety, security, or stability of its state or immediate region. The EBU may commission independent security assessments of the winning country's situation, and if deemed ineligible, the hosting rights will be transferred to another country. This was the case in 2023 when Ukraine, the 2022 winner, could not host due to Russia's invasion, and the contest was held in the United Kingdom, which had finished second. Additionally, the EBU raised the minimum age for participants from 16 to 18, aiming to strengthen safeguards and protect younger artists from pressures associated with the contest. Finally, the EBU clarified rules on backing tracks, which, starting next year, cannot replace or unduly support live vocal performances, including pre-recorded vocals singing the main melody.
