Europeana launches Heritage at Risk online exhibition exploring threats to cultural sites
Three months after the Notre-Dame fire, Europeana, the European Union's digital platform for cultural heritage, launched Heritage at Risk, an online exhibition available in seven languages. The exhibition compiles information, images, and multimedia content on past and present threats—both natural and human-made—to Europe's cultural heritage. It covers sites from the Pantheon in Greece to the Stari Most bridge in Bosnia and Herzegovina, highlighting vulnerabilities to fires, earthquakes, floods, wars, and pollution. The project also examines the potential of digital technologies in restoration and conservation. European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Mariya Gabriel stated that the Notre-Dame fire underscored the need to preserve and protect cultural heritage. Europeana Executive Director Harry Verwayen emphasized that cultural organizations are collaborating and experimenting with new technologies to digitize collections and share data with experts to safeguard important sites.
